What is NDI and Why Does it Matter?
NDI, developed by NewTek (now part of Vizrt), is a powerful IP video standard designed to enable efficient interoperability between devices and software over standard networks. While most commonly used for high-quality, low-latency video transmission, NDI also supports audio and control data, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of applications. NDI High Bandwidth and HX3
The NDI protocol offers two standards: High Bandwidth and HX3, each designed to suit different production needs.
NDI High Bandwidth, uses the SpeedHQ codec to deliver visually-lossless compression with ultra-low glass-to-glass latency, making it perfect for high-quality broadcast production and studio environments where image fidelity is a priority. It requires considerable network bandwidth, around 130 Mbps per stream for 1080p60 and 250 Mbps for 2160p60. ‘Full NDI’ is a wrong usage.
NDI HX3, the latest version of the HX protocol, provides a more bandwidth-efficient option using H.264 or H.265 compression. It offers high-quality, low-latency video while reducing network strain, making it a great choice for remote production, conferencing, and large-scale AV deployments. Unlike previous HX versions, HX3 achieves better latency and quality without demanding the high bandwidth of NDI High Bandwidth.

No, NDI is designed to work over standard IP networks, meaning you can use existing network infrastructure. However, to get the best performance, having gigabit Ethernet and ensuring that devices are properly configured to handle the bandwidth requirements for video streaming is recommended for best performance.
NDI High Bandwidth can require 100 Mbps to 250 Mbps per 1080p stream.
NDI HX3 significantly reduces this to around 20 Mbps to 50 Mbps for 1080p.
Yes, but performance will depend on network stability. NDI HX3 is better suited for wireless use due to its lower bandwidth requirements.
If you already have existing cameras and AV equipment, adopting NDI is still possible without a complete overhaul. You don’t need to replace all your gear – Bolin’s EG40N NDI decoder allows you to connect NDI video streams to your existing HDMI or SDI infrastructure and convert the NDI signal to a format compatible with standard monitors or other traditional video hardware.
NDI supports various audio codecs (PCM, AAC, Opus. etc), multi-channel audio and any audio sample rate for input and output, with resampling support. It is processed in 32-bit floating point format, with 16-bit support also available.
Latency can vary slightly depending on factors such as the type of NDI being used (High Bandwidth vs. HX3), network conditions, and the complexity of the production workflow, but it generally remains very low, often around 1-2 frames or less in most configurations.
